Translations to and from Chinese.

Students from China have translated my name to Chinese. My name is Anna, there version is 叶琳. According to them this what you get from my name, because it is very common so you can't just use the phonetic version for everyone. As for surname, they said it was too long for Chinese. As far as I understand it's a genuine chinese name, but I can't understand WHY this one. If there are any options, why not tell me there is a choice? Still it seemed there were actually translating something, not just choosing something random... Is it ok? Doesn't it look like a nickname?
