Information on Chinese Characters

Postby tang_ai_wei » Mon Mar 05, 2007 6:18 am

Hello... this is my first post! hehe =)

I have a question... Do any of you know sites where I can find information on certain chinese characters? We sorta learn about the meanings of certain characters in my Chinese class at school, but i would like to be able to look up information on my own.

For instance... we learned in class that 林 means "woods" because woods alot of wood (木). And just the same, 森 means "big forest" because it has even more wood(木).

Also I learned that the character for "good/fine" is 好 because in China it is good luck to have one son and one daughter.

I also learned that the chinese character for "which" is 哪 because the character 那 means "that" and the character 口 which means "mouth" because you ask a a question with your mouth... so that is why 口 transforms 那 "that" into 哪, because 哪 is the question form of 那.

does anyone know where else I can find more detailed information on the symbolism in chinese characters?
