When was the start for HK movies being filmed in Cantonese

Post by Tom » Sun Dec 30, 2001 4:28 pm

In the 70s HK movies were still produced only
in Mandarin language.
Does anybody know, when the movie industry
started to film movies in Cantonese ?
( I guess it was end 70 s, but I am not sure)

from the hkcyber.com's - http://yulok.hkcyber.com/filmshow/info/history/ &
http://yulok.hkcyber.com/filmshow/info/trend/40.asp
the first cantonese movie was "platinum dragon" dircted by Tang Xiao-dan in china (in ~1931-3).
the first (hong kong made) cantonese movie should be "lifeline" directed by Gwaan Man-ceng in 1935.
p.s.: since the english translation for "關文清" & "湯曉丹" were not known, "Gwaan Man-ceng" & "Tang Xiao-dan" in jyutping & pingying were used.

Hi, thanks for your answer.
My question was not detailed enough :
when in the 70s , did the big movie companies
start to film in Cantonese ( again).
In the beginning 70s, Mandarin was THE language
for the big movies.
All Bruce Lee and even the early Jackie CHan
movies were shot in Mandarin.

I think that in Hong Kong they always filmed in Cantonese. They just dubbed it in Mandarin for the markets that were primarily Mandarin speaking.
In Taiwan and China they filmed in Mandarin.

Hi,
a HK native confirmed to me that films in HK were produced in Mandarin until the late 60s or early 70s. Since then they are produced in Cantonese. No precise idea when the switch happened.
TVBS-Europe is currently showing some very old films in Cantonese language from HK on saturday afternoons. The programme magazine does not say anything about the year, when the films have been produced. To me they look like from the 60s or even earlier, but I probably misjudge that. You might try to inquire at the TV station using one of the e-mail addresses you will find at www.chinese-channel.co.uk.
Good luck !
