Re: Some new PDF's I've found

Haha...look what I found: Oh, I had seen this one already! The songs I'm addicted to are precisely sung by the same guy: 余畑龙. But of course, it's not Gangnam Style... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czQw4PyW-lU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVrPYWHJz9g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiSjwfbKX...

Re: Singaporean Movie: It's a great great world (toā-sè-kài

Sim, thanks for your views on Malaysia/Singapore split. I've just read the Speak Mandarin Campaign article from Wikipedia again. I think I read it a few years ago, and it wasn't that aggressive. Seems like lots of informations were added, good thing. Did you have a similar campaign in Malaysia too? ...

Re: dialogs for learning Hoklo w/ a tutor

Help with a few words

I think I already had a similar thread from one year ago, but since I'm not sure whether it's okay to revive it or not, I'm now creating a new one. I've been taking classes with a teacher from Cebu. She writes dialogues for every class, but she uses her own romanization + Mandarin. I'm having troubl...

Re: 金門話

Cathy, if I'm not mistaken, I remember have read someone describing something similar as being one of the reasons why one should take some time learning Shanghainese. I'm just not sure who and where to quote it here... Since I still can't speak Taiwanese, I still haven't had such an experience. But ...

Re: 金門話

Thailand expat forums are full of these stupid old farangs (I guess that's the Thai equivalent to ang mo) with that mentality. I used to ask questions about Isaan (Lao) or Lanna/Kham muang there. Most replies used to get are the one I told you and "Master Thai first and then you can focus on a diale...

Re: Some new PDF's I've found

Glad it worked now, Sim! I'm really happy to have this 三字經 edition with English annotations Cathy posted. Going to print it soon! I still have the audios she sent me one year ago, so it's all perfect. Today during lunch, I was following the book with the audio and it's great! No need to buy th...

Re: 金門話

My "father tongue" is actually 金門話, but I grew up speaking 同安話 (which is my mother tongue). I like the accent, sounds very musical and easy on the ears. It's like first time too I hear those kind of E and I in Hokkien. Are your vowels like that too? The ones they represent by er and ir? I don't kno...

Re: Singaporean Movie: It's a great great world (toā-sè-kài

I also strongly dislike most Taiwanese tv series, which are usually long winded with stupid plot that play for hundreds or even 1 thousand episodes. If only they can have some like Taiwan Mandarin (youngsters) or Hong Kong tv series. The only one I liked was 浪淘沙, about the first female doctor in Ta...

Re: Some new PDF's I've found

SIm, maybe you should try downloading and opening the file in a standalone PDF viewer instead of your browser. Or wait some time until it loads completely. I just tried it here and it seems to work fine... :/ It's a very basic book. However, if only I could get the Hakka textbook by the same author,...

Re: dialogs for learning Hoklo w/ a tutor

Thanks, amhoanna! These seem actually pretty interesting, indeed. And very far from the bookish conversations I'm used to. Since it's already Tue, I'll hand them out to her on Sat. This way she'll have a whole week to think about these  Expect to hear something from me in 1w and a half! I gave ...

Re: Some new PDF's I've found

Cathy, in the back of the 三字經 book you posted, they mention a Hokkien textbook. I managed to locate it: https://www.dropbox.com/s/fla3lcvw09mdiga/HVLB.pdf It's very very basic, but the most surprising thing is that the author uses POJ. I'm just not quite sure it's Singaporean Hokkien, as I've never ...

Re: Interesting black and white Taiwanese movie

Just take your time, amhoanna! Just make sure to include stuff you think that would be interesting. Maybe Mandarin instead of English would work better with her. And if she doesn't know a word, I guess she can ask someone else and find out  It took me a while to figure out 將 was 将. Japanese...

Singaporean Movie: It's a great great world (toā-sè-kài 大世界)

A nice Singaporean movie mostly in Hokkien. The plot is very simple: after her a-má's death and close down of her family's studio, a girl decides to give back the pics that decorated the shop to their owners. In order to find out who these people are, she goes after one of her a-má's friend. The mov...
