Re: Hoklo on Luzon (Philippines Hokkien), reports from the f

Interesting that the Cantonese are regarded as "hiongchin". By the same token, isn't Mandarin just another hiongchin language, official or not? "Gongxi facai" is not a Lannang saying at all, but rather a hiongchin saying... Is that "Kiong-hí hoat-châi"? I think my teacher taught me instead "Sin-nî ...

Re: dialogs for learning Hoklo w/ a tutor

Interesting, some of her tones were actually not what I thought they would be. I'll have to go through it with the audio when I 有閑. You mean different from what you heard in Binondo and Luzon? [d] and [l] are allophonic in her dialect. It should be either "Lí beh khì tólo̍h" OR "Dí beh khì tódo̍h"....

Re: dialogs for learning Hoklo w/ a tutor

Okay, here are both dialogues. I adapted amhoanna's romanization for the first dialogue to POJ and to slightly reflect more my tutor's pronunciation, and added MOE's hàn-jī. I hope I'm not creating too many mistakes. I'll post the audio shortly... [EDIT] Audios are already here. ^^ (I): ht...

Re: Huili̍ppin place names, Hoklo- and Mando-based sinicizat

The one badass word the kid used that stuck in my mind was "tâⁿ" for WRONG. He was practicing writing hanji. He would write a hanji, then say "tâⁿ, tâⁿ" and erase it while his mother would say "bô tâⁿ! bô tâⁿ lah!" We use "tâⁿ" in TW as in têngtâⁿ, but m̄ tio̍h seems more common in these contexts; ...

How do I use hán-kiânn 罕行?

I found this expression hán-kiânn ooh 罕行--ooh on my Taiwanese phrasebook, but I'm not quite sure of how to use it and when. They translate it as ご無沙汰しております, but that expression in Japanese is usually used in letters, not in spoken Japanese (unless it's a very formal setting). The Mandarin translatio...

Sim, he also posted this article recently. It's worthy reading. http://opinion.inquirer.net/46435/kiong-hee-please And thanks for sharing another of your stories, Sim. Re: 金門話

I think FutureSpy is a fair bit younger than most of us, and a huge bit younger than me ! Not that young. I turned 24 this year, and that's almost 25, which means I'm almost hitting 30 and still haven't done anything. I still don't even have an university degree nor any working experiences :...

200 sentences in 6 Hakka dialects from Taiwan

I posted that on Minnan/Hokkien forums. I don't think it's a good idea to duplicate posts, so I'm posting a link to the thread here:

Re: dialogs for learning Hoklo w/ a tutor

amhoanna, thanks for your improved romanization! cèngsi ...and you forgot lut8-si as an alternative to it  [EDIT] BTW, here's what MOE's dictionary says: 受當事人委託或法院指定,依法協助當事人訴訟、出庭辯護,以及處理有關法律事務的專業人員。以前叫「狀師」(tsn̄g-su)。 Possibly 狀師? I'll let you know by the end of the week after I hear her pron...

Re: Help with a few words

Sorry, amhoanna! I've just checked the audio and, guess what? She says ku and not koh. For some reason, I forgot to change it in her romanization. My bad! Anyway, I still need to find out if she says ku in other contexts instead of kúi. But yeah, it's probably kui2-loh8... [EDIT] Okay, seems l...

Re: Help with a few words

Thanks, amhoanna! "Koh loh mai" sounds like a corruption of "kúilõ pái". Good one! Since you're considering corruptions... I asked a Taiwanese to give me her version of the sentence a few days ago, and she used kui2-loh8 幾落, or at least that's it according to my notes. Maybe loh is the same loh8 her...

Re: 金門話

I turn myself loose in a language relatively early compared to F-Spy, apparently -- let alone Sim. Indeed. Yesterday, I was in the supermarket with a friend of mine, and two French girls approached him and asked in English if he knew where the eggs were. I should have said something in French, but ...

Re: Help with a few words

Thanks, amhoanna! The "a" on the end MIGHT be the same animal as the one on the end of "siâng-a" and "tólo̍h-a". Funny thing she says siâng-a, but never chiunn3-a. I'll try to watch what she says to see if there's another example for -a or -e after this kind of words... "Chiunn3" is related to...
